Bessie,

Your Facebook PPT is excellent. It is very informative. I think it can be a useful tool in academics. It will allow us to reach more students and possibly for us to post assignments and lessons so students can access them from any computer.

Dear Bessie,
Your blog is lovely. And design layout too. They show a very organised and informed mind - and your Facebook articles are truly impressive. I must get onto Facebook as soon as possible. It hardly seems like we are finishing anything, just getting started. Facebook too as you said is new and rapidly being developed. 19 million members there. It is difficult to believe they are all students !! Friendster by the way has 43 million members, but MySpace has more hits per day.

I wonder how we can use Facebook in distance education. This of course was the topic - I guess this point is a little bit critical, but I trust you take it constructively and helpful. What I want to say is how can we or how do they use fFacebook in distance education. It might be mainly as virtual coffeee shop or dating, rumour-mongering, even bullying site. I would also guess they all use pen-names, so their comments might run the gamut pretty close to offense. I wonder if teachers would be welcomed there or given a cold shoulder (bullying style tactics used in Japan against other classmate students sadly).

Do you have suggestions for Facebook in distance education ?
Do I? wonder. Or other of our members ??

Do we think that distance students need the social forum in order to use the academic forums better for learning ? I guess it will increase their keyboard typing skills - but have you seen what passes as hip-language on these crazy chat sites - I am shocked. Now if students of french language used Facebook to chat in French then I would be IMPRESSED. Actually I would be impressed if they could master English ;-)

Diane does suggest teachers could post assignments and this might work for use in distance education. Though teachers need some kind of feedback to know the intended tudent received it on time, and this might be just bending email to facebook. We need to think and discover the academic merits of facebook, the advantages of the medium, and case study on its successes and pitfalls. It looks an exciting new channel... And your ppt Camtasia came through beautifully, as was your diction.

I didnt really care about the design of my blog: it was to me just a writing space, but your blog has shown me they can and maybe should be user-friendly and refreshing for visitors - yours is !
All Best Wishes
Paul

Bessie,
Your PowerPoint was very informative. Thank you for the facts.
I agree that many institutions do not like the social networks because they have no control of how they will be used. This is one of the reasons I will be using my Ning social network for my class - I will be able to monitor everything that happens there and I can keep it closed to only students.
I've enjoyed your work!

Dear Paul:
I appreciate your comments very much. The 19 million members are not all students but Facebook has the largest number of student members among college oriented social networking sites.
My initial assessment (limited authoritative literature on this subject) has been that Facebook is not documented as a widely used social networking tool in distance education. I have posted another blog 'Facebook and Distance Education' as an attempt to address that aspect of use. Please feel free to comment.
Many thanks!
Bessie
